Your best bet is too be ultrahonest about how you have a prior engagement that you CANNOT miss. However if you feel during that discusion that they arent buying it or still wont let you get off, then its ok to change up your story or make things seem more “dire”. Now that I think about it you should be fine with saying that you are a reporter and you HAVE to cover this. That should be enough in its self.

Your day could very well be over by 12:00 (I would think 4:00 at the latest) unless you are involved in heated discussion that keeps you longer. As long as the Kent State Golden Flashes aren’t playing in the afternoon, you might just be okay.

That said, I agree with theWJ. You may (or may not) be shocked to find that somebody of importance down there really really like KSU Hoops and is willing to pull a string for their favorite writer. Well, second or third anyway.

Be sure to tell them that you really want to serve and are willing to serve at the next session. Your job depends on it, and with the economy as it is, it really is a job related hardship. Again, let them know that you want to serve, just at the next session.

I got called last year during a week I was going on vacation. I simply called and asked them to change my week and they obliged. I received a new summons reflecting my new time to report in the mail a week or so later.

When I first opened the letter, I was told by a few friends that it is a pain in the neck to get the jury duty changed…

… I’ve since been told here and by a few other friends that it shouldn’t be a problem.

I’m looking forward to serving … but not nearly as much as I am to covering the MAC tournament and possibly the NCAA tournament. Post-season basketball is easily the most important time (and the highlight) of my work year.

I don’t know much more about Porrini other than the story I wrote for the Record-Courier last week. Just about everything he said in my phone call with him is quoted in the story.
KSU’s coaches can’t talk about him, but I’ve heard from a few people that he’s a tough kid with a mean streak, kind of in the mold of Singletary. I think that’s something KSU could need. The key to this program’s success has always been tough kids with attitudes… Most teams have a few really talented players, but blood-and-guts guys like Demetric Shaw, Antonio Gates, Nate Gerwig, Kevin Warzynski, Jordan Mincy and Chris have been the difference. I don’t think Geno Ford ever wants to see this become a “finesse” team. I think Porrini will help to make sure that doesn’t happen.

Any word on the Jarvis situation? I saw Jarvis at the WMU game and he told me he would find out last week. I have not heard any updates.

Good luck Dave! That would be a crying shame if you could not cover the MAC and hopefully NCAA tournament.

I hope that he heard on his 6th year of eligibility, but the NCAA is almost as bureaucratic as the US National Government, so I would expect it to take at least a few more weeks, if not a month. I heard that he would not hear until some time around the end of March.

if the season ended today, who would be in our side of the bracket in mac tournament?

if we lost to akron in the final regular season game & finished in 1st place tie with them, what is the next tie-breaker after head to head results?

Hi Mike,

I believe Kent State’s side of the bracket would be… No. 8 Eastern Michigan vs. No. 9 Ohio with the winner playing No. 1 Kent State, and No. 5 Central Michigan playing No. 12 Toledo with the winner playing No. 4 Miami.

I can’t find my copy of the tiebreakers from last year. I’ll get them all tonight prior to the Kent State-Ball State game and post them here.

I got a call from a very nice woman from the Summit County Courthouse yesterday. They are postponing my jury duty to the week of April 12.

i’ll take that side of the bracket. although would prefer to see miami replaced with a team from the west.
