(Sorry I’ve been away … been recovering from the flu … Here’s what is going on…)
The first day of the early signing period for NCAA men’s basketball programs arrived and passed without an announcement from Kent State.
Golden Flashes fans shouldn’t be alarmed. This has happened before.
The school is still waiting for all of the paperwork to arrive. An announcement on five recruits signing national letters of intent could come early next week.
As expected, junior-college guard Carlton Guyton (Mineral Area College), Massillon Jackson forward Mark Henniger, Cincinnati Aiken forward Kenny Knight and Hillcrest (Illinois) guard Eric Gaines will be in the signing class.
The new addition is 6-foot-6, 225-pound former Mott Junior College forward DeAndre Nealy. According to a source close to the KSU program, Nealy has verbally committed and will sign sometime this week.
KSU has a sixth available scholarship that will go to former Bedford forward Robert “Scooter” Johnson, who is already on the Kent State campus and working towards becoming academically eligible.
ALSO …
I’ve found an advance look at the likely schedule the 2010 recruiting class will be playing.
Kent State is close to signing a deal to play at the University of Florida early in the 2010-11 season in a game that would be televised by one of the ESPN family of networks.
The Flashes are also close to an agreement to play in an exempt tournament at Cleveland State. In addition to playing Gary Waters’ Vikings, KSU would also play games with Bryant University, Monmouth and a non-Division I opponent to be named later, all at CSU’s Wolstein Center.
The rest of the non-conference schedule is loaded with games at the M.A.C. Center, including a visit by Stan Heath and South Florida, Youngstown State and Robert Morris. The Flashes are also close to an agreement that would bring Louisiana Lafayette to Kent.
Other than the trip to Flordia and the tournament at Cleveland State, the only other road games currently on the schedule are KSU’s ESPN BracketBuster game and the return game from this season’s BracketBuster opponent.
Stay tuned.
