Season 4, sixth-place finisher Constantine Maroulis is keeping busy, even without a new recording on the market. Now with longer hair than we last remember him, he was spotted on Thursday with Manhattan socialite and fashion entrepreneur Tinsley Mortimer at the USA Network and Vanity Fair 2010 Character Approved Awards at the IAC building in New York.

Were you surprised? I was. Watching Ashley Rodriguez and Tyler Grady walk off the “Idol” stage is a bit disappointing. I thought both could have become more seasoned singers and performers with a little more coaching and experience.
Janell Wheeler – while good for the eyes – probably wasn’t going to make the top 12 anyway. Same goes for Mr. Munoz for the guys. I’m not all that disappointed losing those two.
But back to Ashley and Tyler … I haven’t seen a lot of big-time talent with this group and I feel the top 24 is losing two with some good potential. I sure hope that this past week’s poor performances were 50 percent nerves because if the singing and performing doesn’t get much better, “Idol” may see its ratings take a nosedive. Today, I couldn’t believe how many people said they may not watch if the talent doesn’t improve.
I enjoyed watching Allison Iraheta’s performance and thought Kris Allen did a nice job with “Let It Be.” But let me ask you this: Whenever you hear “Let It Be,” do you have a flashback to that fantastic “Let It Be” performance from Brooke White a couple of seasons ago?
OK, we’re down to 20. Let’s see how much everyone improves.

HCD Research conducted a national study among 4,154 “American Idol” viewers and it revealed that Ashley Rodriguez and Haeley Vaughn as the female contestants who should be eliminated tonight based on their performances Tuesday night.
The study was conducted during February 23-24, by HCD Research using its mediacurves.com website, to obtain American Idol viewers’ perceptions of which female contestants should be eliminated on tonight’s results show.
Viewers gave Crystal Bowersox, of Ohio, the most votes, followed by Lilly Scott and Katie Stevens.
How accurate is this study? We’ll find out tonight.

Oh, my ears hurt! No wonder why there is a strong field in the girls – the boys were not that good at all tonight.
For the first time, I used Twitter and tweeted throughout the show on twitter.com/markfroelich
Here are the posts in order of the performances:
- Todrick Hall: didn’t the judges just say Tuesday that the girls should change the songs? I Iiked his version of Since U Been Gone.
- Aaron Kelly: looks nervous. Simon looks bored. Please Ellen, be funny! Show that humor!
- Jermaine z z z z z z
- Tim Urban can’t hit the high notes. he’ll be going home
- Somebody rescue Idol tonight! Munoz just booked his ticket home.
- Tyler Grady livens things up with American Woman. Agree with judges about the 70s comparison. But he should be safe.
- Lee Dewyze can’t carry a note … yet he is probably the best so far and has lots of potential.
- Nice shot of Simon sitting back in his chair probably frustrated with John Park. Boring!
- I’m missing Paula to tonight. She could definitely put a positive spin on these performances
- That guitar looks so little on Michael Lynche!
- Lovin’ Lynche! Kara is spot on: it was good, not great.
- Finally Ellen gets funny with a critique! She comments on the mullet on Lambert then compared him to a banana. Great stuff!
- Casey James is probably the best of the night.
- Over doing it with Kara and Casey. Let it go.
- Whew it’s over. Andrew wasn’t great either. Rough night for the boys.
- Strange first two days of Idol. Two days of struggling singers. Will the viewing numbers go down?
Bottom 4 pick: Alex Lambert, John Park, Joe Munoz and Tim Urban.
Going home prediction: Tim Urban and John Park.
Tomorrow’s show will include “Idol” winner Kris Allen and third-place finisher Allison Iraheta!

I need to talk/rant more about Ellen’s first live night on “Idol.” I like Ellen. I think Ellen is very, very funny. But after watching Tuesday’s show for a second time, I gotta say: Her first night on “Idol” live was not good, not da bomb, not dope and not anything I expected.
What did I expect? Some humor. She almost looked like she was forced to hold back her comedy last night. Was she told not to be funny? Granted, the beginning of the show when she was sitting next to Simon made me laugh, but so did Kara when she said virtually the same thing later in the show.
I don’t want Ellen to steal the Idol judging stage with her comedy; I just want her to be herself … which is (from what I’ve seen on her “Ellen” shows) funny AND fun.
How many times did we hear her say “You’re great!” Several times, she offered a poor critique, but then followed with “I’m sorry … but you’re great!” They can’t be great and poor at the same time, can they? I’ll chalk Tuesday night up to first-time jitters.
Your thoughts on Ellen?

Who was worse tonight? The girls or the judges? Seems like when there was a half-decent performance, Simon, Ellen, Randy or Kara ripped it apart.
I’ll agree with the judges that all the songs sounded way too much like the originals. But this is Round 1 – they’re going to be nervous and they’re going to learn. Tonight was a great lesson for these competitors to make their songs original. Those who make it back next week will takes some major risks just to please the judges – so we’ll see some interesting performances next week, I’m sure. (And I’ll be the guys are up late tonight rehearsing trying to change up their songs for Wednesday, too.)
By the way, we’re getting through to vote very easily tonight … I don’t recall it being this easy before. Is this a bad sign for Idol?
How did you like Ellen? Honestly, I was expecting more comedy to lighten things up a bit like she did during Hollywood week. She was pretty straight forward tonight and I’m not so sure that was the way I like her best. I like her comedy and want her to show that as a judge, too.
At the bottom prediction: Haeley Vaughn, Lacey Brown and Janell Wheeler
Going home prediction: Vaughn and Wheeler
Let’s have it …. your thoughts of the show?

The top 24 are here and there are talented people here … or so it seems. I haven’t seen every one of them perform, so it’s way too early to say who the strong performers are, but I do have strong feelings about some of the 24. Here are my top boys and girls on no particular order:
Boys: Michael Lynche, Andrew Garcia, Casey James and Tyler Grady
Girls: Ashley Rodriguez, Crystal Bowersox, Katie Stevens and Paige Miles
Let’s be daring and take it a step further: No. 1 man: Tyler Grady; No. 2 girl: Ashley Rodriguez.
Stay tuned after Tuesday’s live performances by the girls for my top 12.
