Barney would be proud

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

In case you missed Erica Rhodes’ audition last week, I have posted it below. As a young girl, Rhodes used to be an actress on “Barney & Friends.”

1-27 Idol auditions – Dallas

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Best auditions show of the season … so far. This is from a production standpoint, by the way.

From a guest judge standpoint, I thought Neil Patrick Harris was outstanding. His critiques were firm and honest. I liked the bit the producers put with the disagreements between he and Simon, although it probably was blown out of proportion. (They did the same thing last night with Katy Perry and Kara.) The second-day judge – Joe Jonas – was non-existent. He didn’t say much, he looked nervous, uneasy … it was almost like he wasn’t there.

But my favorite bit of the night was from Erica Rhodes, the 23-year-old grad student from Irving, Texas, who was an actress on “Barney & Friends.” I’m not ashamed to say that I remember Rhodes while watching Barney often with my children. I never would have recognized her on the audition stage, especially with the high heels & whip! But she did a great job. I’m not sure she’ll be in the top 24 because I wasn’t overly impressed with her vocals, but I think she accomplished what she set out to do and that is show people that her character has grown up.

The Idol judges travel to Denver next week.

1-26 Idol auditions

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

Wow! That was an interesting show. Probably my least favorite judges of the audition cycle. I thought both Avril Lavigne and Katy Perry showed way too much ego; Lavigne wasn’t on much and maybe that was because of her youth? I was really annoyed with Lavigne early when Jim Ranger sang in front of the judges. Ranger is the worship pastor with three kids. He sang well and impressed most of the judges with his singing voice. However, Lavigne says, “Your married and have three children and a pastor. To be a pop star, you have to travel and leave everything. It’s tough.” And based on that, she says “no” to sending him to Hollywood. Fortunately, the other judges got him through. But the fact is, as a judge, you’re not here to judge whether or not he/she can make it with family matters; does the person have SINGING talent and are they likeable/marketable or not? It’s pretty simple, really. She shouldn’t be judging him based on family, but on his talent. So that set me off right away. Thankfully, she wasn’t on long.

Katy Perry came through on the second day. Did it look like the producers of the show set it up to make her look bad for disagreeing with Kara all the time? It sure looked that way to me.

I’m not going to comment much about the contestants. I watch the show mostly after its 8 p.m. EST showing. As I buzz through the commercials and just hit the nuts and bolts of the show, I have come to realize that “Idol” really doesn’t show that many auditions. That’s good because it makes me really want to watch Hollywood week to see what we missed.

Wednesday’s another show in Dallas. Sure looks interested … especially with Barney! Guest judges are one of the Jonas Brothers (Joe?) and Neil Patrick Harris. Should be interesting … I hope!

Top 24 finalist ousted?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

It appears as though Florida’s Michael Lynche is the first person ousted from “American Idol” … and we’re still watching the audition’s on TV!

According to reports circulating on the Internet, Lynche allegedly made the cut in the top 24. But MTV.com is reporting that he was dropped “after his dad, Marque Lynche Sr., told a local newspaper about the event.”

The leak was initially reported in a St. Petersburg Times article titled, “American Idol rumor: St. Pete native Michael Lynche is among the show’s Top 24 semifinalists”

This should make people tune in to “Idol” during Hollywood Week (mid-February).

David Cook interview

Monday, January 25th, 2010

David Cook appeared on an interview via Skype with Walletpop.com to talk about his appearance on “Extreme Home Makeover” and also about the current status of his career.

The Season 7 winner has been able to muster three hit singles since that “Idol” finale: “Time of My Life,” “Light On” and “Come Back to Me.” I’ll tell you … he sure comes across as a genuine, likeable person … not full of himself at all, and a singer deserving of success.

Bo’s son

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Season 4 runner-up Bo Bice welcomed his third baby son recently, according to his Twitter post. Bo & his wife already have a 17-month old son and a 4-year-old son. Hopefully we’ll hear something musically from Bo soon. I always thought that his rendition of “Vehicle” could have been a hit.

Idol auditions – Orlando

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

What a way to start Orlando’s auditions with Theo Glinton … he’s complete with the feather on his ear and the silver buttons all around his right eyes. Simon asks about Theo’s plans in 10 years … and he answers that he wants to own hair dressing salons. Dude, you’re on “American Idol” … shouldn’t you be saying that you want to be on your 10th CD with 5 Grammys in 10 years?!?! And the compassion shown by Kara on Glinton’s dismissal was nice to see.

Simon’s classic line of the night to a contestant: “You walked in like a cocktail stick and then sang as if you sat on a cat.”

Nice story on 28-year-old Seth Rollins, with the autistic child. Glad he’s going to Hollywood, but not sure he’s good enough to make it to the final contestants in the fan-voting round. When was the last time you saw a Sinatra-singer in the finals?

Another great story for Idol with Shelby Dressel, the 18-year-old from Avon Park, Fla. who was born with a defect on the right side of her face. Nice singer and she’s going to Hollywood. This is one of those auditions I wondered if Simon was going to “smart off” about her voice, but I think he was a little surprised. Good to see all judges gave her the “Yes” vote.

It’s the second-coming of former “Idol” runner-up Blake Lewis! Jay Stone auditions and sounds really similar to Lewis … and Randy couldn’t even remember Blake’s name!!! Stone’s in Hollywood, but I hope he uses his singing voice, which wasn’t too bad either.

Wait, wait!! Did Randy just say “There’s something infectious about you”? Is Paula Abdul in the house? I thought we were going to go the entire season without that word? My hopes have been dashed!

Not really impressed with the rest of the crew, except our last contestant, the former bank robber. Nice that he’s going to Hollywood, but he reminded me of last year’s Michael Sarver … and where exactly is Sarver these days?

More auditions in a week … maybe I’m just tired, but can we get to the fan voting yet?

Idol in Chicago

Tuesday, January 19th, 2010

Well .. quite a @#$%&*’ start to ‘American Idol’ tonight! Wow! They included enough bleeps that I thought I was on the Comedy Channel instead of Fox…

Katelyn Epperly of Des Moines, Iowa was the first contestant and I can already tell that Shania Twain should be a permanent judge on the show. She is quick with her wit (saying “Yum” to the “Syrup and Honey” song), she has that wonderful charm, she’s wonderful to look at, she’s in the music business and she appears to be very intelligent. Maybe she’ll wind up on Simon’s “X Factor”?

Amy Lange, from West Chester (how ironic?), Ohio, couldn’t sing, but the boob flex sure got the attention of the judges. But thankfully, Simon got her out of there quickly. At least she got her 30 seconds of fame. She wasn’t good enough return for the finale, was she? LOL! Maybe in the finale, they’ll have Mr. “Pants on the Ground” from last week and the Ms. “Boob Flex” perform together! Yikes!

Charity, at 16, sounded great and more impressive was Simon saying she would sound great on a record. That is the highest compliment, I think.

“When you’re good, try, try again works” – those were the words of Shania Twain about 28-year-old Angela Martin, who is off to Hollywood once again. She has a great voice and I think she’ll do well in Hollywood with her experience.

Enough already on Day 2 of Chicago! Bad, bad contestants, especially with Brian “Screech” Krause!! Give me something good here with a golden ticket .. please!!!

Finally … thank you John Park. This guy sounds a bit like James Ingram, doesn’t he?
Paige DeChausse 21, the girl with asthma, was a nice ending piece to the show. Glad she’s going to Hollywood.

Overall, decent show, but I can’t emphasize this enough: Shania Twain was an excellent guest judge. Seriously, Simon, sign for X Factor!
